Being in this Total Lunar Eclipse in Leo~ 1.20.2019, 9:16 pm

Astrology is a fine art which bridges both the analytical and the mystical and intuitive. Recently, my own practice of astrology has shifted from “readings” to “beings”….rather than attempting to dissect and understand each piece of information encoded in an event or chart, I’ve found myself more drawn to simply “being” with the event in that moment, letting the larger mystery of the stars speak to me how it will. As such, I stepped away from writing about astrology, stopped trying to define what is happening and just experience it instead.

Here then, as we move into a total lunar ecclipse in Leo, is my sharing of the”being” in this particular alignement. There are echoes of the divine creative Sun-heart (Leo), the waters and the collective wisdom (Aquarius), as well as the moutains of Capricorn and the oceans of Cancer (the nodes this eclipse cycle aligns itself with).

Amidst the dark and wild uncertainty of life on this planet, from the depths of the ocean to the highest mountain pinnacle, may we all remember:

leofullmoon-tofu-jan2016-3.jpg

it is the light of the heart that shines the brightest!

there is only one thing to find, or know, or keep: the precious song of your heart- it’s been waiting for you to listen.

Learn it well, but don’t try to make it stay. And don’t try to impress anyone with it either.

Simply share it, humbly and with no announcements, like the laughing sun, the rainbow, the endless silver rain.

the only way to keep remembering is to keep sharing, until the beauty of the music overcomes us all.

Herbs for Smoke Part 2: it ain't just a Lung thing...Your Liver needs your help too!

In my first herbal support for smoke inhalation article ( see my August blog) I went over some specific strategies, treatment principles and herbal ideas for smoke support during the summer wildfire season…this updated blog highlights the importance of supporting not only the respiratory system, but the Liver as well, due to the extremely toxic nature of the chemicals and pollutants released by the large number of burning buildings in California. You’ll also find my personal herbal recipe here for supporting Lungs, Liver, and chemical stress.

The conditions we are currently dealing with in California are different now than just smoke from a wildfire…a forest fire gives us natural old fashioned wood smoke and particulates, a stress on the Lungs for sure, but nothing compared to the large amounts of toxic chemicals and pollutants that are released when houses and buildings burn. This is why structural firefighters have been known to have one of the highest cancer rates of any profession.

The toxic smoke storm blowing through California right now is no joke, requiring us to support both our respiratory systems and also our Liver and detoxification pathways. Fortunately, our amazing herbal allies are up to the job, and our bodies will be grateful for the support. The Liver is an amazingly regenerative organ, made of millions of tiny identical cells called hepatocytes. When injured (such as by exposure to toxins) hepatocytes are able to repair themselves, over and over again. Because of this, the Liver is the only organ that can regenerate itself. This is part of the creative ability of the Liver as understood in Traditional Chinese Medicine. However, the Liver does have limits- with too many repeated chemical and environmental stresses, it can lose it’s regenerative abilities. Too often, because of the Livers’ miraculous restorative powers, people may actually be unaware that they are damaging this most special organ. Throughout our lives, many of us may be exposed to incredible amounts of pollutants and chemicals and still feel great….to a point. By the time people begin to lose Liver function, the damage has already been done. This can possibly be corrected through intensive and dedicated herbal therapy, along with acupuncture, but why go there if we can prevent it in the first place?

With this in mind, I’ve concocted a formula for herbal support for both smoke and chemical impacts to the body, which targets the Liver and the bodies’ detox functions, protects the body from chemical damage, soothes inflammation, and supports the respiratory system.

Smoke and Environmental Detox Tea

Cheers!

Cheers!

Nettles (4 parts): strong anti inflammatory, anti-allergy, blood purifier, sky-high chlorophyll content, diuretic which helps flush toxins from the system

Licorice (2 parts): universal detoxifier, neutralizes damaging chemicals, adaptogenic, soothes sore throat and cough. do not take in hypertension cases.

Tulsi (3 parts): adaptogen, adrenal tonic, antimicrobial, purifying and protective against environmental pollutants, also known to treat asthma

Elderberry (2 parts): stops cough, very high in antioxidants, anti-cancer, boosts immunity

Schisandra (1 part): proven to repair chemical damage to the Liver, also assists Lung and adrenal function

Horsetail (1 part): high Silica content soothes mucus membranes and aids in their repair, great for eye irritation.

Oat straw: (1 part): high in calcium and magnesium and thus a supportive tonic for the nervous system, soothes mucus membranes and inflammation. oat straw is gluten free, however, for those who are sensitive, oat straw is often processed on the same equipment as other grains. make sure your oatstraw is certified GF.

To brew a medicinal dose of herbal tea, use 1 tsp herbs to 1 cup water. Place elderberries and schisandra berries in water first, bring to a boil, covered. Reduce heat and simmer covered 5-10 minutes. Turn off heat, add the remaining herbs, and steep covered for 20 minutes. Let cool, and enjoy.

4/3/18- How TREES can be our teachers this Mercury Retrograde

29594659_10216573782960793_8695891282618970050_n.jpg

This Mercury retrograde in Aries (with Mars conjunct Saturn in Cap) is certainly not beating around the bush...
Mercury retrograde means past interactions are coming up for review, and the self righteous tug of Mercury in Aries to speak out from ego is strong. Meanwhile, Mars and Saturn, planets of action and structure, are amplifying the drive to make things "real" in the world. And, their placement in Capricorn gives it all a no nonsense style that aint for the faint of heart.  Do everyone a favor, including yourself, and refrain from saying it, acting on it, mobilizing it, whatever your "it" may be right now, til at least after Mercury goes direct on April 15th. Better yet, until Mercury has fully traversed the entire retrograde path after May 2nd.

Patience with oneself and others is the best virtue to cultivate now. Use the energy at hand to get clear on what it is you are aligned with, in a deep and principled way, rather than a reactive push-pull way. The energy of Capricorn reminds us that greatness begins by having a firm foundation to stand upon. Similiarly, in this Wood element season of spring, we can look to our friends and teachers the Trees for reminders on the importance of establishing our roots in order to grow tall.

Tree medicine can also offer us much right now in the way of patience, humility, and the ability to abide peacefully right where we are. In Chinese Medicine, the point Liver 1, wood point on a wood channel, is symbolic of the beginning of Spring. Liver 1 is also called Great Esteem, and it teaches us to identify and root in to what is essential to our life path. Smack on the tip of the big toe, it's location is also symbolic of the roots and foundation we need to attend to in order for our life vision to flourish. Mercury retrograde is an ideal time to step back and determine what that is. Perhaps the push to what seems to be calling for urgent action is actually more of a calling to get clear on what we want, what supports us in our life path, and the higher principles we wish to align ourselves with and grow towards.

In particular, the energy of the Birch tree supports us in living our life purpose with purity and uprightness... Walnut is helpful for those feeling mired in family drama, Chestnut helps clear the mind from worry, and Cedar establishes us in a field of protective love, so we don't feel like we need to lash out or fight back. Oak helps us slow down and let our highest self be the guide, and Spruce can help us to integrate the past experience into present wisdom on a soul level. Mercury will go direct on the Aries new moon of seed planting on 4/15, and this will be a much more cosmically aligned and supported time to take action.
